Salisbury Steak with Onion Gravy
Ingredients
For the steaks
- 1 lb ground beef (80/20 works great)
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 egg
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp Dijon mustard
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- Salt & pepper to taste
- 2 tbsp oil (for frying)
For the onion gravy
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp soy sauce (optional, for extra depth)
- Salt & pepper to taste
Instructions
1. Make the patties
- In a bowl, combine breadcrumbs and milk; let sit 5 minutes.
- Add ground beef, egg, chopped onion, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
- Mix gently (don’t overwork), then form into 4 oval patties.
2. Cook the patties
- Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
- Add patties and cook 4–5 minutes per side, until browned.
- Remove patties and set aside (they don’t need to be fully cooked yet).
3. Make the onion gravy
- In the same skillet, add butter and sliced onions.
- Cook 5–7 minutes until onions soften and begin to caramelize.
- Sprinkle flour over onions and stir for 1–2 minutes.
- Slowly whisk in beef broth until smooth.
- Add Worcestershire sauce (and soy sauce if using).
- Simmer 3–5 minutes until gravy thickens.
4. Finish cooking
- Return patties to the skillet.
- Spoon gravy over them.
- Cover and simmer 10 minutes, until patties are cooked through.
Serving Suggestions
