🌽 Fried Cornbread (Southern Style)
Ingredients
- 1 cup cornmeal (medium or fine grind)
- ½ cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp baking soda
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 egg
- 1 cup buttermilk (or regular milk + 1 tbsp vinegar)
- 2 tbsp melted butter (optional)
- Oil for frying (vegetable, canola, or peanut oil)
Instructions
1️⃣ Make the batter
In a bowl, whisk together cornmeal, flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
In another bowl, whisk egg and buttermilk, then mix into dry ingredients.
Add melted butter if using.
2️⃣ Heat the oil
Pour oil into a skillet to a depth of about ¼ inch. Heat over medium-high until hot (about 350°F).
3️⃣ Fry the cornbread
Spoon batter into the hot oil in small rounds (like pancakes).
