Here’s a simple and delicious creamy custard dessert recipe—smooth, sweet, and perfect on its own or with fruit:
Classic Creamy Custard
Ingredients (serves 4):
- 2 cups whole milk
- 4 large egg yolks
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
- Optional toppings: caramel sauce, fresh berries, or whipped cream
Instructions:
- Heat the milk:
- In a medium saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat until it’s warm but not boiling. Remove from heat.
- Mix egg yolks and sugar:
- In a bowl, whisk together egg yolks, sugar, and salt until smooth and slightly pale.
- Temper the eggs:
- Slowly pour a small amount of warm milk into the egg mixture while whisking constantly.
- Gradually add the rest of the milk, whisking to avoid curdling.
- Cook the custard:
- Pour the mixture back into the saucepan.
- Cook over low heat, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon or heatproof spatula, until it thickens and coats the back of the spoon (about 5–7 minutes). Do not boil—curdling will ruin the texture.
- Add vanilla:
- Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.
- Chill:
- Pour custard into serving dishes.
- Let cool to room temperature, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours until fully set.
- Serve:
- Top with caramel sauce, fresh berries, or a dollop of whipped cream.
