Baked Stuffed Cabbage Rolls
Ingredients
For the cabbage rolls
- 1 large head of cabbage
- 1 lb ground beef (or mix beef + pork)
- 1 cup cooked rice
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 egg
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp paprika (optional)
For the sauce
- 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
- 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
- 2 tbsp brown sugar (or honey)
- 2 tbsp lemon juice or vinegar
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp pepper
- 1 tsp dried oregano or thyme
- 1 tbsp olive oil
Instructions
1. Prep the cabbage
- Bring a large pot of water to boil.
- Carefully remove the core from the cabbage.
- Boil the cabbage head for 5–8 minutes until leaves soften.
- Remove leaves and set aside to cool.
2. Make the filling
In a bowl, mix:
- ground beef
- cooked rice
- onion
- egg
- garlic
- salt, pepper, paprika
3. Roll the cabbage
- Take one cabbage leaf and trim thick vein if needed.
- Place ~2 tbsp filling in the center.
- Fold sides over the filling and roll tightly.
- Repeat until all filling is used.
4. Make the sauce
In a bowl, combine:
- crushed tomatoes
- tomato sauce
- brown sugar
- lemon juice
- salt, pepper
- oregano
- olive oil
5. Assemble and bake
- Spread a thin layer of sauce in the bottom of a baking dish.
- Place cabbage rolls seam-side down in a single layer.
- Pour remaining sauce over rolls.
- Cover with foil.
6. Bake
