🥩 Ground Beef & Gravy with Mashed Potatoes
Ingredients (Serves 4)
For the Mashed Potatoes:
- 2 lbs (900g) russet or Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled & cubed
- 4 tbsp butter
- ½–¾ cup warm milk (or half & half)
- Salt & pepper to taste
For the Ground Beef & Gravy:
- 1 lb (450g) ground beef
- 1 small onion, finely diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth (warm)
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- ½ tsp dried thyme (optional)
- Salt & black pepper to taste
Optional add-ins:
- 1 cup sliced mushrooms
- ½ cup frozen peas
- Splash of heavy cream for richer gravy
Instructions
1️⃣ Make the Mashed Potatoes
- Place potatoes in a pot and cover with cold salted water.
- Bring to a boil and cook 15–20 minutes until fork tender.
- Drain well and return to pot.
- Add butter and mash.
- Gradually mix in warm milk until smooth and creamy.
- Season with salt and pepper. Keep warm.
2️⃣ Make the Ground Beef & Gravy
- In a skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef until browned.
- Add onion (and mushrooms if using) and cook 3–4 minutes.
- Stir in garlic and cook 30 seconds.
- Push mixture to one side. Melt butter in empty space.
- Stir in flour and cook 1–2 minutes (this removes raw taste).
- Gradually whisk in warm beef broth.
- Add Worcestershire, thyme, salt, and pepper.
- Simmer 5–7 minutes until thickened.
- Stir everything together and add peas if using.
If gravy gets too thick → add a splash of broth.
If too thin → simmer longer.
To Serve
Spoon mashed potatoes into bowls and ladle rich beef gravy over the top.
Optional garnish: chopped parsley or cracked black pepper.
